Why certificates have those wavy engraved borders
The fine, interlaced line-work on banknotes, share certificates and old diplomas is called guilloché. It was first cut by rose-engine lathes in the 1600s and later adopted by security printers because a single, unbroken line that loops thousands of times is very hard to redraw by hand or copy cleanly on early photocopiers. Today it mostly signals "this is an official document", which is exactly why certificates borrow it.
Mathematically, most guilloché rosettes are hypotrochoids: the path traced by a pen fixed to a small wheel rolling inside a larger ring, the same thing a Spirograph draws. Change the wheel size or the pen's distance and you get a completely different pattern. Try it:
The pattern closes after the wheel goes round the ring 35 times and has 96 lobes: ring ÷ gcd(ring, wheel) = 96 ÷ 1.
Notice that when the wheel and ring share a large common factor, the curve closes quickly with few lobes; when they share none, the pen wanders round many times before it meets its own start, which produces the dense mesh security printers prefer.
